Membership in Boards & Commissions
City boards and commissions were established for the purpose of advising the City Council and providing ongoing input into policies and issues affecting the future of the San José community. All persons seeking membership on a board or commission must be San José residents and some commissions have additional membership requirements. Some applications will be reviewed and interviewed by the Council Appointment Advisory Commission. Applicants are appointed by the City Council. Members are usually appointed for a four-year term. All meetings are open to the public and copies of the agendas are available at least 7 days prior to any regularly scheduled meeting.

Policy for Public Comments
Correspondence to the City Clerk, City Council, Boards, Commissions, or Committees are public record and will become part of the City’s electronic records, which are accessible through the City’s website.  Before posting online, the following may be redacted: addresses, email addresses, social security numbers, phone numbers, and signatures.  However, please note: e-mail addresses, names, addresses, and other contact information are not required, but if included in any communication to the City Council, will become part of the public record.  If you do not want your contact information included in the public record, please do not include that information in your communication. The appointment process varies depending on the Board or Commission you are applying for. The full process and procedure of recruitment, selection, and the appointment are dictated by the City's Consolidated Policy Governing Boards and Commission, also known as Council Policy 0-4. Notice of Vacancies
The City of San Jose invites interested members of the community to participate in the process of City Government by serving on one of several Boards and Commissions. All positions are voluntary and most appointed by the City Council. The time commitment for each board or commission varies, with some meeting on a regular schedule, while others meet on an as needed basis. Additional time obligations may include pre-meeting preparation or subcommittee attendance. Once appointed, attendance at regularly scheduled meetings is critical. 

NOTE: The City Clerk’s Office continuously accepts applications for all Boards and Commissions. Vacancies listed below are for currently available seats.

Deadline to apply is 11:59 p.m. on the indicated closing date. Unless otherwise stated, applicants should live within the City limits of San José and cannot be City employees. Terms may be from two to four years unless the vacancy is due to an incumbent resigning mid-term. In that case, the appointment is to the remainder of the unexpired term.
